In Limbo
By Julija Suput
“In Limbo” by Julija Suput is the true story of a
family’s immigration from Croatia to America. Barbara and her two young sons
wait to board a plane to America. At the end of their journey, they will begin
a new life with Barbara’s fiancé, a Croatian-born American citizen. She and
Nenad fell in love the previous year while he was visiting her remote island
home. After years of working as a high school teacher and raising the boys
alone, Barbara quickly said yes to the promise of a better life in California. Sitting
in the airport, she looks forward to new opportunities for her children and living
in the fine house her future husband built especially for her. In America,
Barbara is confronted by the harsh reality of a fast-paced society, an
unpredictable environment and an unexpected chill in the place she now calls
home. While struggling to keep up with the challenges of her new life, Barbara discovers
that everything is in jeopardy including the future of her children. She begins
an uphill battle against bureaucracy and indifference to save them.
This captivating
immigrant’s story uncovers the author’s personal struggle to free her family
from the chains of the U. S. Citizenship process. Ms. Suput reveals the silent
hardships new immigrants can endure while completing American Citizenship
requirements. A genuine and intelligently written memoir, “In Limbo” is a
strong-willed story that flows as gently as life itself. I highly recommend
this book as an eye-opening look at the immigration process in America.
